Encountering Christ Through Visio Divina: A Sacred Contemplation

In the midst of a world clamoring for our attention, the Catholic tradition offers a wealth of spiritual practices to draw us closer to Christ. Among these, Visio Divina, or “divine seeing,” provides a unique and beautiful pathway to contemplative prayer. By engaging with sacred art and imagery, we can open our hearts to encounter the living God, allowing His grace to illuminate our souls.

What is Visio Divina?

Visio Divina, rooted in the rich contemplative tradition of the Church, is a form of prayerful reflection that uses visual imagery as a means of encountering Christ. It invites us to move beyond mere observation and into a deeper, more intimate communion with the divine. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2501) reminds us, "The creation of works of art requires knowledge and skill and reveals man's genius. With artistic creation, man seeks to probe the depth of the mystery of man and the world, as does scientific research. Both are, therefore, forms of human expression that attain particular intensity when they seek to express, in their specific language, the mystery of God." Through Visio Divina, we allow sacred art to become a conduit of grace, revealing the mysteries of our faith.

The Graces of Visio Divina:

  • Spiritual Communion: Visio Divina fosters a deeper spiritual communion with Christ, allowing us to encounter His presence in the beauty and symbolism of sacred art. As Fr. Mike Schmitz eloquently states, “Liturgical art is a symbol that points to a greater reality than itself. It is meant to lift our hearts and minds to the Lord in a way that words cannot.”

  • Contemplative Prayer: This practice cultivates a spirit of contemplative prayer, enabling us to quiet our minds and rest in the loving gaze of God.

  • Enhanced Discernment: By prayerfully engaging with visual imagery, we can sharpen our spiritual discernment, becoming more attuned to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

  • Growth in Virtue: Visio Divina can inspire us to cultivate virtues such as patience, humility, and reverence, as we contemplate the lives of the saints and the mysteries of our faith.

  • Encountering Divine Beauty: As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2502) teaches, "Sacred art is true and beautiful when its form corresponds to its particular vocation: evoking and glorifying, in faith and adoration, the transcendent mystery of God—the surpassing invisible beauty of truth and love visible in Christ." When we participate in Visio Divina, we are seeking to encounter that "surpassing invisible beauty of truth and love visible in Christ." We allow sacred art to fulfill its vocation.

  • As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2503) states, “Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier.” Visio Divina is a method to engage with sacred art, or any art for that matter, in a way that allows this drawing to occur.

How to Practice Visio Divina:

  1. Visio/Gaze:

    • Look at the chosen sacred image, be it an icon, a painting, or a stained-glass window.

    • Allow your eyes to rest upon the details, noticing any elements that draw your attention.

  2. Meditatio/Meditate:

    • Reflect on the image, connecting it to the truths of our Catholic faith and your own spiritual journey.

    • If using Scripture, prayerfully listen to the words, allowing them to resonate within your heart.

    • Imagine yourself present within the scene of the art.

  3. Oratio/Prayer:

    • Engage in a personal dialogue with God, sharing your thoughts, feelings, and prayers.

    • Offer gratitude for the gift of sacred art and ask for the grace to understand its deeper meaning.

  4. Contemplatio/Contemplate:

    • Rest in the presence of God, allowing His love to fill your heart.

    • Listen for His gentle voice, receiving any insights or inspirations He may offer.

A Call to Contemplation:

May Visio Divina become a cherished practice in your spiritual life, drawing you ever closer to the heart of Christ. Through the beauty of sacred art, may you encounter the living God and experience the transformative power of His love.
